Performance Results and Characteristics of Adopters of Genetically Engineered Soybeans in Delaware
Genetically engineered (GE) soybeans first became available to farmers in 1996. Despite the common questions regarding any new crop technology, the new seeds were rapidly adopted. This study examines the characteristics of adopters, as well as yield and weed control cost changes, using survey results from Delaware farmers at the start of the 2000 season. Duration analysis reveals that earlier-adopting farmers had larger farms and tended to use computers for financial management, while regression analysis shows significantly lower weed control costs and, to a lesser extent, higher yields for GE soybeans.Crop Production/Industries,
Long-term Variability Properties and Periodicity Analysis for Blazars
In this paper, the compiled long-term optical and infrared measurements of
some blazars are used to analyze the variation properties and the optical data
are used to search for periodicity evidence in the lightcurve by means of the
Jurkevich technique and the discrete correlation function (DCF) method.

Hand-held radiometer red and photographic infrared spectral measurements of agricultural crops
Red and photographic infrared radiance data, collected under a variety of conditions at weekly intervals throughout the growing season using a hand-held radiometer, were used to monitor crop growth and development. The vegetation index transformation was used to effectively compensate for the different irradiational conditions encountered during the study period. These data, plotted against time, compared the different crops measured by comparing their green leaf biomass dynamics. This approach, based entirely upon spectral inputs, closely monitors crop growth and development and indicates the promise of ground-based hand-held radiometer measurements of crops
A Rule-Based Approach to Analyzing Database Schema Objects with Datalog
Database schema elements such as tables, views, triggers and functions are
typically defined with many interrelationships. In order to support database
users in understanding a given schema, a rule-based approach for analyzing the
respective dependencies is proposed using Datalog expressions. We show that
many interesting properties of schema elements can be systematically determined
this way. The expressiveness of the proposed analysis is exemplarily shown with
the problem of computing induced functional dependencies for derived relations.
The propagation of functional dependencies plays an important role in data
integration and query optimization but represents an undecidable problem in
general. And yet, our rule-based analysis covers all relational operators as
well as linear recursive expressions in a systematic way showing the depth of
analysis possible by our proposal. The analysis of functional dependencies is
well-integrated in a uniform approach to analyzing dependencies between schema
elements in general.Comment: Pre-proceedings paper presented at the 27th International Symposium

Radiation damage and annealing in large area n+/p/p+ GaAs shallow homojunction solar cells
Annealing of radiation damage was observed for the first time in VPE-grown, 2- by 2-cm, n+/p/p+ GaAs shallow homojunction solar cells. Electrical performance of several cells was determined as a function of 1-MeV electron fluence in the range of 10 to the 13th power to 10 to the 15th power e-/sq cm and as a function of thermal annealing time at various temperatures. Degradation of normalized power output after a fluence of 10 to the 15th power 1-MeV electrons/sq cm ranged from a low of 24 to 31 percent of initial maximum power. Normalized short circuit current degradation was limited to the range from 10 to 19 percent of preirradiated values. Thermal annealing was carried out in a flowing nitrogen gas ambient, with annealing temperatures spanning the range from 125 to 200 C. Substantial recovery of short circuit current was observed at temperatures as low as 175 C. In one case improvement by as much as 10 percent of the postirradiated value was observed. The key features of these cells are their extremely thin emitter layers (approxmately 0.05 micrometers), the absence of any Al sub xGd sub 1-x As passivating window layer, and their fabrication by vapor phase epitaxy
Crystal structure of a hemojuvelin-binding fragment of neogenin at 1.8 Ă…
Neogenin is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein with a large ectodomain containing tandem immunoglobulin-like and fibronectin type III (FNIII) domains. Closely related to the tumor suppressor gene DCC, neogenin functions in critical biological processes through binding to various ligands, including netrin, repulsive guidance molecules, and the iron regulatory protein hemojuvelin. We previously reported that neogenin binds to hemojuvelin through its membrane-proximal fifth and sixth FNIII domains (FN5–6), with domain 6 (FN6) contributing the majority of critical binding interactions. Here we present the crystal structure of FN5–6, the hemojuvelin-binding fragment of human neogenin, at 1.8 Å. The two FNIII domains are orientated nearly linearly, a domain arrangement most similar to that of a tandem FNIII-containing fragment within the cytoplasmic tail of the β4 integrin. By mapping surface-exposed residues that differ between neogenin FN5–6 and the comparable domains from DCC, which does not bind hemojuvelin, we identified a potential hemojuvelin-binding site on neogenin FN6. Neogenin FN5, which does not bind hemojuvelin in isolation, exhibits a highly electropositive surface, which may be involved in interactions with negatively-charged polysaccharides or phospholipids in the membrane bilayer. The neogenin FN5–6 structure can be used to facilitate a molecular understanding of neogenin’s interaction with hemojuvelin to regulate iron homeostasis and with hemojuvelin-related repulsive guidance molecules to mediate axon guidance
